Cefpodoxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the class of cephalosporins, specifically a second-generation cephalosporin. It is used to treat various bacterial infections by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. The dry syrup form is a reconstituted liquid preparation, typically used for pediatric or geriatric patients who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.
The usual dosage is 100 mg to 200 mg per day, depending on the type and severity of the infection. The dosage is usually divided into two equal doses per day.
For children, the dosage depends on the child’s weight and the type of infection. A typical dosage is 5 mg/kg often divided into two doses per day.
The syrup can be taken with or without food.
Measure the dose accurately using a proper dosing device such as a measuring spoon or syringe.
Do not administer Cefpodoxime if the patient has a known allergy to cephalosporins, penicillins, or any other beta-lactam antibiotics, as there may be a cross-reactivity.
Cefpodoxime is eliminated via the kidneys, so dose adjustments may be required in patients with renal dysfunction (e.g., kidney disease). Monitor renal function if using for prolonged periods or in patients with pre existing renal conditions.
Like other antibiotics, Cefpodoxime can disrupt the normal flora of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms (e.g., fungi), causing secondary infections.
The safety of Cefpodoxime during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should only be used in pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the risk. It is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to nursing mothers.
Overuse or misuse of Cefpodoxime (or any antibiotic) can contribute to antibiotic resistance. Ensure that it is only used for bacterial infections confirmed to be susceptible to this antibiotic.
Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic: Effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, useful for treating respiratory, urinary tract, and skin infections.
Convenient Liquid Form: Ideal for children or individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets, as it is in syrup form.
Effective for Resistant Infections: Works against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria, offering treatment for resistant infections.
Well-Tolerated: Generally safe with mild side effects like gastrointestinal discomfort.
Easy to Administer: The dry syrup form can be reconstituted with Water for Injection (WFI), providing a precise and convenient dosage.
