ASTHA-Dx is a combination oral syrup designed to provide relief from symptoms associated with respiratory conditions, such as coughing, congestion, and sneezing, often seen in colds, flu, or allergies. The syrup combines three active ingredients: dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant), chlorpheniramine (an antihistamine), and phenylephrine (a nasal decongestant), which work together to relieve cough, reduce nasal congestion, and alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections or allergic rhinitis.
Route of Administration: Oral syrup.
Typical dose for adults: 10 ml (containing 20 mg dextromethorphan, 4 mg chlorpheniramine, 10 mg phenylephrine) every 4-6 hours as needed, not exceeding 4 doses per day.
Typical dose for children (age 2-12 years): 5-10 ml (depending on age and weight) 2-3 times daily, or as directed by the healthcare provider.
Administration: Shake the bottle well before use. Measure the prescribed dose using the provided dosing cup or spoon, and take it orally. The syrup can be taken with or without food.
Drowsiness: Chlorpheniramine can cause drowsiness. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. This syrup should be used with caution in individuals who need to stay alert.
Alcohol Use: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medication, as it can enhance the sedative effects of chlorpheniramine.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy should be done only if prescribed by a healthcare provider. The ingredients are excreted in breast milk, so consult a healthcare provider before using during breastfeeding.
Heart Disease: Phenylephrine may increase blood pressure. Caution is advised for patients with hypertension or heart disease.
Chronic Conditions: Use cautiously in patients with asthma, glaucoma, or enlarged prostate due to potential side effects related to chlorpheniramine.
Hypersensitivity: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan, chlorpheniramine, phenylephrine, or any of the other components of the syrup.
Severe Hypertension or heart disease: Contraindicated in patients with severe hypertension, arrhythmias, or other serious heart conditions.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Should not be used within 14 days of taking MAOIs (a class of antidepressants), as this may cause serious interactions.
Cough Suppression: Dextromethorphan is effective in controlling dry, non-productive cough by suppressing the cough reflex in the brain.
Relieves Nasal Congestion: Phenylephrine acts as a nasal decongestant, reducing swelling of the nasal passages to make breathing easier.
Alleviates Allergic Symptoms: Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that helps reduce symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.
Symptom Relief: The combination of these ingredients provides fast relief from multiple cold and allergy symptoms, improving comfort.
Convenient Liquid Form: The syrup formulation is easy to administer, especially for children or patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules.
