Dosage and Administration
Starting Dose: Generally, the starting dose for adults is 500 mg once daily, with possible adjustments based on the patient's condition and response.
Titration: The dose may be gradually increased, typically up to 1000 mg to 2000 mg daily, depending on the clinical response.
Administration: Take once daily with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing to maintain its extended-release effect.
Precautions
Liver Toxicity: Regular monitoring of liver function is important, especially during the first 6 months of therapy. Liver failure is a serious risk, and patients should report any symptoms of liver problems (e.g., yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Pancreatitis: There is a risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), which can be severe or fatal. Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
Pregnancy: Divalproex Sodium can cause birth defects (including neural tube defects). It should only be used in pregnancy if absolutely necessary, and effective contraception should be used.
Blood Disorders: Regular blood tests are required to monitor for thrombocytopenia (low platelets), leukopenia (low white blood cells), and other hematologic conditions.
CNS Side Effects: Can cause sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, and cognitive impairments such as memory problems. Use caution when performing tasks requiring mental alertness, such as driving.
