Lithium Carbonate SR Tablet 450mg

Lithium Carbonate is a mood stabilizer that is most commonly used for managing bipolar disorder and manic episodes. The SR (Sustained Release) formulation is designed to release the medication gradually over time, providing steady therapeutic levels in the bloodstream.

  • Recommended Usage
Indications

Bipolar Disorder: Lithium Carbonate is primarily used to treat bipolar disorder, particularly for:

Acute manic episodes: Helps to control and reduce symptoms of mania such as irritability, agitation, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

Maintenance treatment: : It is used to prevent or reduce the frequency of mood swings in patients with bipolar disorder, preventing both manic and depressive episodes.

Treatment of Depression: Lithium can be used as an add-on treatment for unipolar depression, particularly in cases where depression is resistant to other medications.

Cluster Headaches:Lithium is sometimes used to help prevent cluster headaches, though this is an off-label use.

Dosage and Administration

The starting dose of Lithium Carbonate SR 450mg is generally around 450-600mg daily, typically divided into two doses.

Precautions

Renal Function: Lithium is excreted through the kidneys, and kidney function must be closely monitored throughout treatment. Patients with kidney disease may require lower doses or may not be suitable candidates for lithium therapy.

Thyroid Function: Lithium can affect thyroid function, causing hypothyroidism.

Electrolyte Imbalance: Sodium levels should be closely monitored, as lithium and sodium share similar pathways for excretion. A low-sodium diet, dehydration, or excessive sweating can increase lithium levels and increase the risk of lithium toxicity.

Pregnancy: Lithium is not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester

Benefits

Effective for Bipolar Disorder: Lithium remains one of the most effective treatments for bipolar disorder, reducing both the frequency and severity of manic episodes and helping to prevent depressive episodes.

Mood Stabilization: Lithium helps maintain mood stability by balancing the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, providing significant relief for patients with bipolar disorder.

Long-Term Management: Lithium is particularly effective for long-term management and prevention of mood swings in patients with bipolar disorder. The sustained-release form offers more stable blood levels with fewer fluctuations.

Reduction in Suicide Risk: Studies suggest that lithium has an added benefit of reducing the risk of suicide in patients with bipolar disorder or major depression.
