Moxisept I.V.

MOXISEPT I.V. is an intravenous infusion containing Moxifloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It is used for the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections, especially in cases where oral antibiotics are not suitable or when rapid onset of action is needed.

  • Recommended Usage
Indications

MOXISEPT I.V. is used for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory Tract Infections:
    • Community-acquired pneumonia
    • Acute bacterial sinusitis
    • Chronic bronchitis (acute exacerbation)
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
  • Intra-abdominal Infections
  • Complicated Urinary Tract Infections
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Bacterial prostatitis
  • Other infections caused by susceptible organisms

Moxifloxacin is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria, making it a versatile choice for serious infections.

Dosage and Administration

Route of Administration: Intravenous infusion.

Typical Dose for Adults:

- General Infections: 400mg of Moxifloxacin administered via intravenous infusion once daily.

- Severe Infections: The same dose of 400mg is commonly used for more severe infections, with adjustments based on clinical response.

Duration of Therapy: Typically administered for 5 to 14 days depending on the severity and type of infection.

Administration: The infusion should be administered over a period of 60 minutes. Do not administer as a rapid IV push or bolus.

- For IV administration, dilute the infusion in a compatible diluent (e.g., sodium chloride or dextrose) as per guidelines.

Precautions

Hypersensitivity: Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the infusion.

QT Interval Prolongation: Moxifloxacin may prolong the QT interval and should be used with caution in patients with a history of arrhythmia or other heart conditions.

Tendinitis and Tendon Rupture: Fluoroquinolones, including Moxifloxacin, have been associated with tendon damage, especially in elderly patients or those on corticosteroid therapy.

Renal and Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment may be required in patients with severe renal or hepatic dysfunction.

Seizures: Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or central nervous system disorders.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Moxifloxacin should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised during breastfeeding.

Superinfection: Prolonged use may lead to superinfection with non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.

Benefits

Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic: Effective against a wide range of pathogens, including Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria, making it useful for various serious infections.

Once-Daily Dosing: Simplifies treatment regimens, typically requiring only one dose per day, even for severe infections.

Rapid Onset of Action: The intravenous formulation provides rapid therapeutic levels, ideal for serious infections or patients who cannot take oral antibiotics.

Effective for Complicated Infections: Especially effective for treating complicated respiratory, skin, soft tissue, and abdominal infections.

Convenient for Hospital Use: The IV formulation is ideal for hospitalized patients or those requiring immediate treatment, allowing for efficient dosing and minimal need for frequent administration.
