Indication
Griseofulvin is primarily used to treat superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes, such as:
- Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body)
- Tinea cruris (jock itch)
- Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)
- Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm)
- Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections)
- Tinea barbae (fungal infection of the beard area)
Dosage and Administration
Usual Dosage:
o For adults: 500 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily, depending on the severity of the infection.
o For children: The dosage depends on body weight and the type of infection. Typically, 10-20 mg/kg body weight per day.
Instructions:
o Take the tablet with a fatty meal or milk to increase absorption.
o Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Duration:
o Treatment duration can range from 2 to 6 weeks for skin infections.
o For nail infections or scalp infections, treatment might last several months (up to 6 months for nail infections).
Precautions
Liver Disease: Griseofulvin should be used cautiously in patients with liver disorders as it can affect liver function. Liver function tests may be necessary during treatment.
Pregnancy: Griseofulvin is contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential risks to the fetus. Women should avoid pregnancy during treatment and for at least one month after completing therapy.
Alcohol: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of liver toxicity.
Drug Interactions: Griseofulvin can interact with several medications, such as warfarin, oral contraceptives, and barbiturates. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you're taking.
Side Effects: Common side effects include headache, gastrointestinal issues (nausea, diarrhea), and dizziness. Rare side effects include liver toxicity, allergic reactions, and skin rashes.
