Acetylcysteine 200 mg

Acetylcysteine 200 mg is a medication used primarily as a mucolytic agent and antidote for paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose. It has several important therapeutic uses due to its ability to break down mucus and reduce its viscosity, and to replenish glutathione in the liver when toxic substances (such as acetaminophen) threaten liver function.

  • Recommended Usage
Indication
  • Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) Overdose: First-line treatment for paracetamol toxicity. Acetylcysteine helps to prevent liver damage by replenishing glutathione, which detoxifies the harmful metabolites of acetaminophen.
  • Mucolytic Agent: Used to thin and loosen mucus in respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis, making it easier for patients to cough up the mucus.
  • Other Uses: In some cases, it may be used for other conditions related to oxidative stress or respiratory issues under medical guidance.
Dosage and Administration

The standard oral dose for adults is typically 200 mg to 400 mg taken 2–3 times a day, depending on the clinical condition.

For children, the dose is adjusted according to age and weight.

Precautions
  • Allergies: Caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Acetylcysteine or any component of the formulation.
  • Respiratory Conditions: Use with caution in patients with asthma or bronchospasm since it may exacerbate these conditions in some individuals.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: It is classified as category B in pregnancy, meaning it is generally considered safe, but should still be used only if necessary and under medical supervision.
  • Gastrointestinal Effects: Can cause mild side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rarely, it can lead to more severe effects such as anaphylactoid reactions.
  • Liver Impairment: When used for acetaminophen overdose, it is essential to monitor liver function closely.
Benefits
  • Effective Mucolytic: Helps thin and loosen mucus in the airways, improving lung function and ease of breathing, especially in chronic respiratory conditions.
  • Antidote for Acetaminophen Overdose: Critical in preventing liver damage in acetaminophen toxicity, especially if given within 8 hours of ingestion.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Supports liver detoxification and may help reduce oxidative stress in various conditions.
